The “El Transcantabrico” winds its leisurely way through the majestic provinces of old northern Spain - a journey through high mountains, past lakes and impressive seascapes and across the undulating landmass that so typifies the Cantabrian coast and old Castile.

Day 1 San Sebastian - Karrantza

Welcome meeting at 1200hrs in a specified hotel in San Sebastian. Travellers' reception, welcome and guided tour. Enjoy lunch in this elegant and beautiful city which is home to several major cultural events. After lunch transfer by luxury coach to Bilbao, where the El Transcantábrico train awaits you. Welcome drink with the crew. Train trip to Karrantza while enjoying our first dinner onboard. Overnight in Karrantza.

Day 2 Karrantza - Bilbao - Santander

Begin your day with a delicious buffet and a la carte breakfast. El Trancantábrico will return to Bilbao, a vibrant city which has reinvented itself after the decline of its heavy industry. City tour including admission to the famous Guggenheim Museum, iconic symbol of the new Bilbao. Return to the train to continue our journey to Santander while having lunch onboard. City sightseeing tour of this elegant capital of Cantabria and free time to enjoy at your leisure. Those who wish may visit the Grand Casino after dinner (entrance included). Overnight in Santander.

Day 3 Santander - Potes - Cabezon de la Sal

Train trip to Unquera on the train. From there we will travel by luxury coach through the impressive La Hermida mountain pass to reach the town of Potes. After visiting this charming village, enjoy the thermal baths at La Hermida Spa. Lunch. In the afternoon we will visit 'El Capricho' in the town of Comillas, the impressive and colourful 19th century palace designed by Antonio Gaudí. Dinner and overnight in Cabezón de la Sal.

Day 4 Cabezon de la Sal - Santillana del Mar - Llanes

The day begins with a visit to the town of Santillana del Mar with its beautifully preserved medieval town. The next stop is the famous Altamira 'Neocave', a museum and scientific reproduction of one of the finest Upper Palaeolithic cave art ever found. After lunch we will return to the train and enjoy spectacular scenery as we travel into Asturias on the way to Llanes. Dinner and overnight in Llanes.

Day 5 Arriondas - Oviedo - Candas

After breakfast the train will arrive in Arriondas and the coach will then take you into the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. Visit Lake Enol and the sacred sanctuary of Covadonga. Back onboard for lunch and travel to the region’s capital, Oviedo, the heart of Asturian pre-Romanesque art, featuring gems such as the basilica of San Julian de los Prados. City tour and free time. Dinner onboard while we travel to Candás, where we will spend the night.

Day 6 Candas - Aviles - Gijon - Luarca

We begin the day discovering Avilés, an ancient city with a historical old town. On to Gijón, a city that is wide open to the Cantabrian Sea and is alive with cultural events. After visiting both towns, return to the El Transcantábrico to continue our coastal journey to Luarca, visiting this charming seaside town embedded in a stunning landscape. Dinner and overnight in Luarca.

Day 7 Luarca - Ribadeo - Viveiro

Train trip to the historic town of Ribadeo, in Galician lands, bordering Asturias. Our coach will take us to the Las Catedrales Beach, one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. City sightseeing in Ribadeo and lunch. Back on the train as it heads to Viveiro, with city tour and free time. Dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Day 8 Viveiro - Santiago de Compostela

While enjoying our last breakfast onboard, we will arrive in Ferrol, followed by a comfortable coach trip to Santiago de Compostela. Enjoy a city tour in this historical town, a destination for pilgrims for over a thousand year. Explore the city's culture and admire the magnificent Cathedral.    End of trip after a visit to the Parador (at 1300hrs approx).
