Al Andalus - Camino de Santiago Itinerary

The Al-Andalus is a luxury palace on wheels, a unique place from which to enjoy the Spanishlandscape. Its four salons, real railway jewels built between 1928 and 1930, are the perfectplace to enjoy a la carte breakfast and selected dinners and three course meals designed byour renowned chef, Ramón Celorio.  Bar service allows the traveller to enjoy at any time of an espresso, a sherry or a Tom Collins,
relax in the elegant lounges, while the landscape is running past the large windows, or in the privacy of your comfortable room. At the end of the day it is time to enjoy the parties, music, cultural and gastronomic activities or live performances that are offered every day on board.

All suites are air-conditioned with independent adjustment. During the day the room is a comfortable living room with a sofa, while at night the beds are folded out to become an elegant bedroom.

Deluxe Suite
Spacious and elegant suite laid with a bedroom and private bathroom which combines the comforts of the 21st century with the original appearance of this historic train.
• Two metre long double bed which can be turned into a sofa during the day. Possibility of adding an extra small bed for a child.

Day 1 Madrid - El Escorial

Travellers’ reception at 1100hrs at Madrid Chamartin Station. Welcome drink, presentation of the crew and accommodation in suites. We will then start the tour of the Spanish capital boasting treasures such as the Royal Palace, the Cathedral of Almudena, the Royal Basilica of San Francisco or the Madrid of the Austrians. After lunch at a traditional local restaurant, we will continue with the city tour. Return to the train to continue the trip to the town of El Escorial. Dinner and night in El Escorial.

Day 2 El Escorial - Segovia - Astorga

Just as every day, we begin the journey with a delicious buffet and a la carte breakfast. Our coach will then take us to Segovia, listed as a World Heritage City by UNESCO. After visiting this historic and beautiful city with its wonderful Roman aqueduct, we will return to San Lorenzo de El Escorial for lunch. The day continues with a visit to the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance. Dinner onboard the train’s historic early 19th century saloons while we travel to Astorga, a Roman-origin city with monuments such as the Cathedral and its Episcopal Palace, a modernist masterpiece by Antonio Gaudí. Night in Astorga.

Day 3 Astorga - Leon - Monforte de Lemos

We will start the day visiting León, with an old town, home to some of the most important monuments in Spain: the Gothic Cathedral, the Romanesque frescoes in the Basilica of San Isidoro and the impressive Plateresque facade of the Hospital of San Marcos. After lunch and before we continue the train journey, visit Astorga and its monuments. In the afternoon will board the train and travel into Galicia, enjoying again the experience of dining on board while the beautiful scenery rolls past.   Arrival in Monforte de Lemos and overnight.

Day 4 Monforte de Lemos - Ourense

From Monforte de Lemos we will visit the most spectacular part of Ribeira Sacra, a picturesque and fertile region famous for its natural beauty. It is also a well known wine region, producing “mencía” wines (deriving from the mencía grapes), appreciated in traditional in Galician cuisine. Next will be Santo Estevo to visit the magnificent monastery and enjoy lunch.   Return to Al Andalus, stationed in Ourense, where we will have dinner and spend the night.   But before that, enjoy a tour of the city, or optionally an exclusive thermal session at Outariz Spa, by the river Minho.

Day 5 Ourense - Pontevedra - A Coruña

Breakfast while we travel to Pontevedra, where we will visit the internationally known spa island of La Toja. After this visit, from the port of O Grove, we will board a catamaran with viewing windows, on a tour through the Ria de Arousa, where we will be shown the traditional platforms where seafood is grown, while being served delicious mussels. Sail to Cambados, a historical town carved in granite. Visit a typical Galician palace (pazo) and enjoy a tasting of Albariño wine. After lunch we will return to Pontevedra, with free time to explore at our own pace. You can also choose to join the coach trip to Vigo, Galicia's economic powerhouse and the largest city in the region. Back on the train, we will go to A Coruña, where we will have dinner and stay overnight.

Day 6 A Coruña - Santiago de Compostela

We will start the day visiting A Coruña, an historic port and an elegant and vibrant city that preserves a great collection of treasures from its past; get to know its famous Tower of Hercules, the only remaining working Roman lighthouse and a World Heritage Site. After a meal, the Al Andalus will head to Santiago de Compostela. Join the tour of this great pilgrim’s city, featuring breathtaking monuments such as the Cathedral and the Plaza del Obradoiro.   Dinner and overnight in Santiago.

Day 7 Santiago de Compostela

With Santiago de Compostela as a backdrop, we will enjoy our last breakfast aboard the Al Andalus train. Then our luxury coach will take us to the Monte do Gozo, where we can join the last and most emotional stage of the Camino de Santiago, walking down to the doors of the Cathedral. Alternatively, travellers may enjoy free time in Santiago. After our pilgrim experience, return to the train, where the crew will be waiting for us for the farewell. End of trip.
